Email is the fastest route, and it is the one that always works. Describe the problem you have rather than the solution you think you need — that is usually a more useful starting point.

What to include
Nothing formal is needed. These four things make a reply possible on the first attempt rather than the third:
- What the problem is, in your own words
- Who it is for, and roughly how many people will use it
- Whether there is a date it has to be ready by
- Anything you already have — a document, a spreadsheet, an old site
If you do not have answers to all of those, write anyway. Working out the answers is part of the first conversation, not a prerequisite for it.
